THE AEOLIAN MODE

Aeolian (natural minor scale)

Just like the Ionian and the major scale are made by the same seven notes, the aeolian scale is the modal version of the natural minor scale.

Once again we should remember that the difference between modal and tonal lies in the way the notes are treated, rather than in the scale pitch content.

Here are the fingerings of the scale. Black dots are the notes of the triad built on the root (1st, 3rd and 5th degree of the scale), and the white dots are the other notes of the scale (2nd, 4th 6th and 7th degree).
